The Tranquille River UAV flight mission location is just west of Padova City, on the north side of Tranquille-Criss Creek Road near the bridge, close to the east end of Kamloops lake. The first flight mission of the year was conducted on Sunday, March 18, 2018. The river was open, with ice and snow on the banks. As of Tuesday, May 8, 2018, the Tranquille river is raging, with turbidity maxed out and large solids from river bank erosion visible in the flow.

Tranquille River Flood Monitoring

The current video for the Tranquille Creek flood watch contains three sequences of the river from May 12 and May 19, 2018.  The water depth has decreased by about 20 cm.  The river is clearing up.

Hopefully gold panning can start again within the next few weeks!

Our seventh trip to the Tranquille River.  Temperatures are still on the rise.  Water flow has slowed and depth has dropped approximately 20 cm since last inspection. Waters are clearing; turbidity is reduced.

The Thompson River water level near Tranquille River has increase substantially in depth over the past two weeks.  See the fourth photo in the gallery.

  • Water level: moderate; dropping
  • Water speed: moderate
  • Turbidity: moderate; clearing

Notes: River bank erosion has reduced.

The current video for the Tranquille Creek flood watch contains three sequences of the river from May 8 and May 12, 2018.  The volume and flow rate has slightly decreased over the past 5 days.  There is still very little freeboard left. The suspended solids have slightly dropped.

Caution is required along the banks of the river as the banks have eroded and the velocity of the river is quite fast.

Our sixth trip to the Tranquille River.  Temperatures have substantially increased.  Water flow and depth has equalized slightly dropped since last inspection.

A special thank you to Sean Brady, a reporter from Kamloops This Week, for meeting us out at Tranquille river to learn about the Thompson Flood Watch case study and our UAV business.

  • Water level: high
  • Water speed: fast
  • Turbidity: high; clearing slightly – reduced solids

Notes: River bank erosion has reduced.

The current video for the Tranquille Creek flood watch contains five sequences (or 5 visits on different dates) of the river starting on March 18, 2018.  There was not much change in the river flow up to April 19.  The volume substantially increased after that.  There is very little freeboard left and a great deal of suspended solids being carried by the river.

Notice how the river is exceeding its normal levels and is running in the trees on the bank; erosion has started.

Our fifth trip to the Tranquille River.  Temperatures have substantially increased.  Water flow has greatly increased since last inspection.

  • Water level: high
  • Water speed: fast
  • Turbidity: high; beyond saturation

Notes: River banks are eroding.  Some vegetation has been displaced due to erosion.

Our fourth trip to the Tranquille River.  Temperatures have substantially increased.  Water flow has greatly increased.

  • Water level: medium
  • Water speed: medium
  • Turbidity: high

Our third trip to the Tranquille River.  Average temperatures have increased.  Water flow has increased.

  • Water level: low
  • Water speed: slow
  • Turbidity: low

Our second trip to the Tranquille River.  The snow and ice has melted over the past 12 days.

  • Water level: low
  • Water speed: slow
  • Turbidity: very low

Round one of UAV flight missions monitoring water levels at Tranquille River.  Snow and ice is still present, but melting slowly.

  • Water level: low
  • Water speed: slow
  • Turbidity: very low

Tranquille River is a popular place for hiking and gold panning. There is lots of parking near the locked gate at the south end of the trail. Bring your bug spray and sun screen and enjoy a day in the quiet oasis provided by the Tranquille River and accompanying forest along the path.
